The BMW Series 3 appears to have the upper hand when it comes to reliability. The Series 3 houses the battery in the trunk, and the A3's battery is in the engine compartment. The placement of the Series 3 battery will keep it 20 to 30 degrees cooler, which will significantly increase its lifespan. Consumer Reports gave the Series 3 a reliability rating that was 19 points higher than the A3.


Overall, the Series 3 has more powerful engine options as opposed to the A3. The 2.0 diesel engine that comes with the Series 3 can produce 59 more pounds per feet of torque than the A3's 2.0 turbo four-cylinder engine. Speed tests that were conducted by Motor Trend showed that the Series 3 can go from zero to 60 MPH faster than the A3. Also, the EPA test cycle showed the Series 3 gets better gas mileage than the A3. The Series 3 offers a standard eight-speed automatic transmission as opposed to the seven-speed automatic transmission that comes with the A3. The eight-speed transmission provides drivers with better acceleration.
