The 2024 BMW 5 Series marks the model's eighth generation, bringing about substantial engineering, technological, and style enhancements. The new 2024 i5 is also introduced to the BMW lineup, offered as an all-electric luxury sedan alongside the 5 Series. How do the updated 5 Series and the brand-new i5 compare in crucial aspects?

Performance

The 2024 5 Series is available in three trim levels: 530i, 530i xDrive, and 540i xDrive. The first two options come with a mild-hybrid, turbo four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower. The 540i xDrive features a 375-horsepower, turbo inline six-cylinder engine. On the other hand, the all-electric i5 is equipped with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. The battery range is 295 miles, and it can be quick-charged up to 80% in under 30 minutes. Its zero-to-60 time is 5.3 seconds.

Appearance

The redesigned 2024 BMW 5 Series boasts a thoroughly modern and prestigious appearance. The intentionally angled long hood complements the sleek arch over the roof, while the wheels feature a distinctive triangle-style spoke design. The slender and pointed LED headlights at the front lead seamlessly to the rear, and the wide, triangular lower air inlets give it a bold look. The kidney-shaped grille, outlined in chrome and tapering upward, offers a unique touch. Comparatively, the i5 exhibits a similar profile with subtle, smooth accentuation on the sides. Notably, a prominent curved element defines the lower door panels. The i5's nose showcases a similar grille and headlights, along with an upturned lower fascia and sporty air inlets.

Features

Both the 5 Series and the i5 boast an array of similar features, including comprehensive infotainment and driver's instrument screens housed under the same glass, a new BMW infotainment system, a touch-sensitive interactive bar, leather or leather-free interior materials, heated seats, advanced safety technologies, a sunroof, push-button ignition, a navigation system, voice commands, wireless connections for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multiple USB-C ports, a wireless charging pad, and hands-free highway driving capabilities.
