BMW's 5 Series is all-new for 2017, with a redesigned platform and more powerful engine options, as well as semi-autonomous driving technology that separates the 5 Series from the rest of the midsize luxury sedan pack. TestDriveNow.com's Steve Hammes recently spent some time behind the wheel of the new 5 Series and reports that BMW's engineers have succeeded in delivering a lighter, more nimble driving machine that does an outstanding job of balancing agility and comfort.

The 2017 5 Series comes in two flavors. The 530i features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 540i, meanwhile, gets the larger 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that delivers 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive, known in BMW nomenclature as xDrive, is available as available as an option on both models, and the 5 Series is outfitted with a highly responsive eight-speed automatic transmission.
